With solid physical bulk, a good defensive typing, and Regenerator, Amoonguss gives stall teams a reliable answer to specific physical wallbreakers such as Ogerpon-W, Zamazenta, and Urshifu-R. Giga Drain lets Amoonguss threaten Great Tusk and Mega Tyranitar, preventing them from taking advantage of it too easily. Synthesis further improves Amoonguss's longevity, letting it stay healthy when it needs to remain in front of these threats or when switching out to take advantage of Regenerator is not ideal. Spore lets Amoonguss put one foe to sleep, giving its teammates more room to make progress even in matchups where Amoonguss is otherwise passive. Sludge Bomb hits Fairy- and Grass-types such as Iron Valiant, Tapu Koko, and Rillaboom and can punish switch-ins like Garchomp, Cinderace, and Mega Medicham with poison. Clear Smog is an alternative to prevent setup sweepers that don't immediately threaten Amoonguss, such as Calm Mind Raging Bolt and non-Z move Dragon Dance Dragonite, from snowballing out of control. Heavy-Duty Boots helps Amoonguss avoid being worn down by entry hazards, which is especially important because it is expected to switch in repeatedly.
Amoonguss fits exclusively on stall teams that need a sturdy answer to wallbreakers like Ogerpon-W and Urshifu-R. Due to its passivity, it needs teammates that can punish the Steel- and Poison-types that use it as an entry point, such as Gholdengo, Heatran, Mega Scizor, Kingambit, and Pecharunt. Clodsire is especially valuable for handling Gholdengo, Pecharunt, Heatran, and Volcarona, while Gliscor can absorb Knock Off, pressure Gholdengo, and make progress with Spikes. Corviknight and Skarmory further support Amoonguss by switching into opposing Corviknight, which walls Amoonguss and can freely use it as an entry point once a different foe has been put to sleep. Corviknight also checks Kyurem, Tapu Lele, and Hatterene, while Skarmory provides a sturdier answer to Weavile with Body Press. Magic Guard Clefable absorbs Knock Off and eases pressure from physical wallbreakers such as Mega Lopunny, Mega Tyranitar, and Hisuian Samurott without being worn down by entry hazards or status. Dondozo handles physical setup sweepers such as Dragonite, Mega Charizard X, Ceruledge, and Blaziken. Blissey covers special attackers such as Kyurem, Terapagos, Mega Latios, Raging Bolt, and Mega Charizard Y, whereas Mega Sableye helps against Psychic-types like Mega Medicham, whose STAB moves can overwhelm Amoonguss.
