Calm Mind Clefable serves as a resilient setup sweeper, taking advantage of its bulk, excellent defensive typing, and useful abilities in Magic Guard and Unaware. Magic Guard notably provides Clefable with an extremely valuable immunity to entry hazards, in addition to negating Toxic from the likes of Gliscor and acting as a status absorber for the rest of the team, especially if it has already been poisoned. Unaware makes it a strong check to foes that rely on boosting their stats like Swords Dance Garchomp and Bulk Up Great Tusk. Calm Mind boosts allow Clefable to check additional threats like Mega Diancie, making it much less passive against most foes. Moonblast's Special Attack drop chance makes Clefable even harder to break for foes like Tapu Lele. Knock Off removes key items like Leftovers and Heavy-Duty Boots from foes that are not threatened by even boosted Moonblast, such as Toxapex, Heatran, and Volcarona. Alternatively, Flamethrower targets Steel-types, such as Mega Scizor and Gholdengo, and Thunder pressures walls like Corviknight and Toxapex while hitting Heatran for neutral damage, although its accuracy can be unreliable. Thunder is preferred over Thunderbolt thanks to its higher paralysis chance and damage, but the latter is also a viable option. Soft-Boiled is required to provide Clefable reliable and immediate recovery. Leftovers is another source of longevity, providing passive recovery for longer matchups. Life Orb enables valuable damage rolls, like 2HKOing Ting-Lu with one boosted Moonblast and OHKOing Urshifu-R with unboosted Moonblast, and additionally has no drawback thanks to Magic Guard. If Clefable's ability is Unaware, then Heavy-Duty Boots is required to protect it from Spikes and particularly Toxic Spikes, which is important for its setup sweeper role and its ability to check the opposing setup sweepers mentioned above.
Clefable fits on balance teams that appreciate its ability to set up on physical threats like non-Heavy Slam Zamazenta and act as a bulky wincon. Pokemon like Mega Tyranitar and Kingambit appreciate Clefable's ability to pressure foes like Mega Medicham, Mega Lopunny, and Dragonite. In return, Mega Tyranitar pressures troublesome walls for Clefable, such as Galarian Slowking and Heatran, and sets up Stealth Rock, while Kingambit threatens checks like Gholdengo and Galarian Slowking. Entry hazards like Stealth Rock and Spikes synergize incredibly with Clefable, as they help it secure KOs more reliably and clean up late-game, wearing down checks like Heatran. Therefore, entry hazard setters like Ferrothorn, Ting-Lu, and Gliscor are solid partners. Gliscor, in particular, is also capable of crippling the opposing team with Knock Off and removing items like Heavy-Duty Boots from Zapdos. Gliscor also helps Clefable by absorbing Knock Off and status for Unaware Clefable. There are a few Steel-type Pokemon that can take on boosted Moonblast effortlessly, such as Heatran, Melmetal, and Gholdengo. As a result, Clefable appreciates teammates that threaten these Pokemon, such as Great Tusk, Mega Lopunny, and Volcarona. Despite Clefable's great bulk, it still has trouble setting up in front of offensive Steel-types like Kingambit and Mega Scizor; therefore, defensive checks like Zamazenta and Zapdos are great partners.

Clefable is a standout utility piece, possessing a wide variety of utility options along with incredible longevity due to its immunity to entry hazards as well as Toxic from the likes of Alomomola and Toxapex through Magic Guard; this invulnerability to common forms of chip damage allows it to serve as a sturdy check to the likes of Mega Lopunny and Hisuian Samurott for many teams. Clefable is a good user of Stealth Rock due to its positive matchups versus most hazard removal options such as Great Tusk, Terapagos, and Zapdos. Thunder Wave cripples Pokemon that may try to switch in on Clefable, such as Mega Charizard Y and Mega Scizor, allowing for them to be more easily handled. Thunder Wave Clefable also pairs nicely with Hex Gholdengo. Knock Off is Clefable’s most spammable move, removing the items of key targets like Heatran, Ferrothorn, Melmetal, and Toxapex. Leftovers is the item of choice on Clefable to help it check Mega Lopunny and Dragonite in the long term while also helping it avoid a 2HKO from Great Tusk’s Headlong Rush. Leftovers also prevents the need for Clefable to waste Soft-Boiled PP in order to stay healthy.
Clefable fits on balance and bulky offense teams, where its longevity, useful role compression and ability to stave off physical attackers like Zamazenta and Hisuian Samurott are valuable. Pokemon like Kingambit and Terapagos appreciate Clefable checking threats like Dragonite, Mega Lopunny, and Urshifu-R and removing items from their checks such as Ferrothorn and Toxapex. Clefable also forms a terrific core with Spikes setters like Ferrothorn and Hisuian Samurott, as it sets up Stealth Rock to further the chip damage of Spikes and removes Heavy-Duty Boots from Pokemon like Zapdos and Terapagos. Although Clefable has solid longevity, its bulk is less than desirable to be a sole check to threats like Mega Medicham and Garchomp. As such, Pokemon that reinforce its defenses such as Mega Latias and Great Tusk are helpful teammates. Clefable also has issues with a myriad of Steel-types, such as Melmetal, Gholdengo, Kingambit, and Mega Scizor. Teammates that help with these threats, like Zamazenta, Zapdos, and Volcarona, are appreciated.

With a seemingly infinite utility movepool, great typing, and excellent ability allowing it to be unbothered by entry hazards and most status, Clefable cements itself as one of the best defensive options in the tier, able to check significant threats like Mienshao, Buzzwole, and Hydreigon. It also helps its teammates play around certain support options, such as Rotom-Wash, Ting Lu, and Hippowdon and uses these opportunities to set entry hazards or annoy the enemy team with its utility options. Thunder Wave allows Clefable to cripple faster threats like Iron Boulder and Enamorus while also dissuading many of Clefable's checks such as Mega Venusaur and Celesteela from switching in. Knock Off allows Clefable to leverage its numerous entry points to remove key items like Leftovers and Heavy-Duty Boots from checks like Excadrill and Iron Moth. Flamethrower is a niche option typically only found alongside Calm Mind that helps Clefable better threaten Excadrill while also chipping Celesteela. Stealth Rock is generally preferred, as Clefable tends to outlast most hazard control options, like Rotom-Wash and Excadrill, due to Magic Guard. Calm Mind similarly takes advantage of its ability to be unfazed by Toxic, turning it into a resilient sweeper that can punish teams reliant on special attackers like Amoonguss and Volcanion to check it. Rocky Helmet allows Clefable to punish threats such as Mienshao that would otherwise use U-turn and overrun most teams in conjunction with hazards. Leftovers is an alternative that greatly improves Clefable's longevity against the rest of the tier and is especially potent alongside Calm Mind to allow Clefable to overwhelm checks like Mega Venusaur or Aegislash. While maximum Defense investment is recommended to help Clefable withstand physical attackers like Mienshao better, an alternative spread with 68 Special Defense EVs can be used to ensure Clefable always survives an unboosted Iron Moth Sludge Wave, allowing Clefable to cripple it with Thunder Wave or Knock Off. Because of Clefable's ability to handle many dangerous threats and stay healthy throughout the course of a game, it is found on every team style barring hyper offense. Teammates like Celesteela appreciate Clefable dealing with dangerous physical threats like Mienshao and Zeraora; in return, these partners can handle Iron Moth and Mega Venusaur for Clefable. Other defensive partners like Skarmory can pair nicely with Clefable to better handle Mienshao while also providing support against Excadrill and Scizor. Clefable is an adept Stealth Rock setter, which is appreciated by offensive teammates such as Zeraora, Choice Band Iron Boulder, Mienshao, and Iron Moth. In return, these attackers can threaten options Clefable cannot handle, such as Alakazam, Iron Moth, and Mega Venusaur while also racking up hazard damage onto the enemy team, allowing Clefable to outlast such checks. Clefable is also one of the best Knock Off absorbers in the tier, because it doesn't rely on its item to perform defensively, which allows it to support teammates weak to Knock Off like Skeledirge and Aegislash as well as Rotom-Wash and Celesteela, which simply dislike their Leftovers being removed.
